First, remove any dead grass from the area. Next, loosen the top 6 inches of dirt with a rake or aerator. Loose soil makes it easier for the seeds to absorb water and for their roots to spread once they start growing.
Amend the soil with compost or topsoil to improve soil quality and help new sod or grass seed get off to a good start.
Rake and tamp the area so it's level with the surrounding lawn.
